This six-stage model begins with “The Lay Helper Phase” and ends Ronnestad and Skovholt's ModelThis model is based on a longitudinal qualitative study conducted by interviewing 100 counselors/therapists, ranging in experience (at the beginning of the study) from graduate students to professionals with an average of 25 years of experience (Skovholt & Ronnestad, 1192). Ronnestad and Skovholt analyzed the resulting data in three ways, coming up with a stage model, a theme formulation , and a professional model of development and stagnation (Ronnestad (Skovholt&Ronnestad,1192).
